In the beginning
It all started in Sydney in the early 70’s. We set up a workshop in Alexandria to manufacture hand-forged steel furniture for high end stores and designers. Until one day, after much deliberation, we took the leap. We opened a store of our own in Surry Hills and started retailing direct to clients ourselves. From the outset it was clear we were a little fish in a limited market. To grow, we needed a point of difference – something our clients could not get elsewhere. After more deliberation we decided to import Italian furniture to sell alongside our own manufactured lines. And it prove to be the right move.
Filling more gaps
By the late 70’s we’d opened stores in Artarmon, Richmond, and Queensland’s Fortitude Valley, and between them those four stores were servicing clients up and down Australia’s east coast. It was at this time we spotted another gap in the market we could fill.
For 40 years architects had been cladding buildings with a material called Glass Reinforced Concrete (GRC). It was twice as strong as concrete, with only half the weight, and could be moulded into pretty much any shape. Shapes such as outdoor furniture that could last and last, even in Australia’s harsh climate!
We started small, creating one off pieces of GRC furniture in our Alexandria workshop. However, increasing demand from customers soon made it clear we needed to expand. And not only expand but scale up significantly. After more deliberation, careful planning and no small amount of nail-biting this time, we took the biggest leap of all – set up an overseas factory.
A family affair
Yardware has developed continually, thanks to the hard work of three generations, and is still a family owned business today. And still evolving! Our team of artisans work constantly with the latest technology to create an ever expanding range of classic and contemporary furniture and décor wares. We travel the world to source high-quality, one-off, handcrafted pieces, meaning our showroom is constantly changing, making every visit a new experience. Today our main point of difference is our range of mix-and-match décor items that allow clients to personalise their alfresco spaces by creating garden and dining settings uniquely their own. What hasn’t changed is our commitment to offering classic, outdoor furniture of the highest quality. Furniture that is strong, value for money, and with proper care will last a lifetime!
Moving forward
We’ve recently gone back to our roots by concentrating the business in our Alexandria showroom, which is just five minutes from Sydney Airport and 10 minutes from the CBD. We’ve also launched our extensive range of outdoor wares online so we can service customers right across Australia. And the world!
